Here's a real-world example. The U.S. government controls some 3.7 billion square feet of building space (along with millions of acres of land and other infrastructure). Using price data from commercial sources, the likely nationwide cost to occupy these buildings averages $270 per square foot annually. That's a staggering amount of taxpayer dollars. And yet, no one in government can put their finger on the true total cost in a way that enables federal agencies to make sound business decisions.
What's more, because of questionable data compiled over the years, compounded errors have created a looming financial crisis in the management of federal real property assets. This has led to bi-partisan Congressional hearings, Presidential directives to correct the problem, and proposed legislation to remove obstacles in the way of selling unneeded assets.
