VISTAtsi Shares Insights on Building Information Modeling (BIM)

GIS Expert Gary Siorek to discuss the impact of BIM tools on GIS and public safety planning for facilities at annual conference

Herndon, Virginia (September 10, 2009) -- VISTA Technology Services, Inc. (VISTAtsi) announced geospatial information systems (GIS) expert Gary Siorek, GISP, will be a featured speaker at the 2009 Virginia GIS Conference in Richmond, Virginia on September 22, 2009.  Siorek was tapped to discuss the impact of Building Information Modeling (BIM) tools on GIS for local community planning efforts and federal facility management requirements. VISTAtsi is an IT and management consulting firm specializing in asset management and decision support solutions for government and business.

“VISTAtsi is a recognized thought leader in the area of federal real property asset management,” remarked VISTAtsi President and CEO, David B. Baxa. “Gary Siorek is an expert in the GIS field and he has valuable insights to offer conference attendees.  We are proud he was offered this opportunity and can contribute to the GIS community in this way.”

The upcoming presentation also draws on lessons learned during a Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) BIM study in Alexandria, Virginia for which VISTAtsi won an industry award for best collaboration.  It will highlight, and expand upon, public safety considerations and analysis as it relates to both NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) 1710 rules, as well as current federal anti-terrorism standoff requirements for the Department of Defense, Department of Homeland Security, and General Service Administration.

“I am excited to share best practices for integrating architectural and floor plan data from BIM and BIM-compatible applications—like AutoCAD Revit, Onuma Planning System, Google Sketchup, ARCHIBUS FM—within ESRI ArcGIS and Google Earth for planning studies,” explained Siorek, who holds a Senior Solutions Engineer position at VISTAtsi.  “Potentially, federal organizations could utilize these tools to help meet real property and asset management requirements under Executive Order 13327 (EO13327). They also could have a positive impact on local community planning efforts.”

The Virginia GIS 2009 Conference is sponsored by the Virginia Association of Mapping and Land Information Systems and the Virginia Association of Planning District Commissions.  Siorek’s presentation is at 11:35 a.m. to 12:05 p.m. on September 22nd at the Sheraton Richmond West Hotel in Richmond, Virginia.
